Government warns of mass hacker attacks this weekend The government and private technology experts warned Wednesday that hackers plan to attack thousands of Web sites Sunday in a loosely coordinated "contest" that could disrupt Internet traffic. "Organizers established a Web site, defacers-challenge.com, listing in broken English the rules for hackers who might participate. The Web site appeared to operate out of California and cautioned to 'deface its crime' - an apparent acknowledgment that vandalizing Internet pages is illegal." More.

Some artists won't put songs on iTunes The Associated Press reports "Linkin Park and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are standing up for art, but that means you may have a harder time buying their individual songs." The two bands, along with Green Day and Metallica, are among artists refusing to make their songs available as individual downloads. They say it's not about money, but about preserving albums as an art form. As of late June, Apple had sold 5 million downloads through its iTunes Music Store since its April 28 debut. More.

60 GB drive for notebooks offered Trans Intl. has released a 7200 RPM Mobile Hard Disk Drive in 60GB capacity and 2.5 inch form factor. The compay claims its new 7200 RPM drive offers mobile users desktop equivalent performance with battery consumption at about the same level as a 5,400 RPM HDD. The new drive is priced at US$ 350.
