CW: Why the iPhone will change the (PC) world Computerworld compares the iPhone's introduction to that of the original Mac: a perfect amalgamation of the best contemporary UI features. "Jobs' iPhone demo was so powerful that he actually made people believe that Apple invented a whole new user interface. In fact, Apple did something more important than that. The company took some of the best -- hitherto obscure -- UI research and put it into a product that you will be able to buy. It did the same thing with the original Apple computer, the Mac, and with the iPod. This is how Apple changes the world. It takes awesome research out of other people's labs, polishes and perfects it, and then ship it as warm-and-fuzzy consumer products everyone can buy." More.

Cisco Gives Apple More Time for iPhone Response CIO reports that Cisco Systems has given Apple a further extension on the deadline to respond to its lawsuit concerning the iPhone name, the company said late Thursday. "Apple was hit with a trademark infringement lawsuit from Cisco Systems the day after it unveiled a new cell phone under the name iPhone at January?s Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Cisco says its Linksys division owns the trademark on "iPhone" and filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court for Northern California seeking an injunction against Apple using the name. On Thursday evening, Cisco said it had agreed to a request from Apple for more time." More.

The Top Five Shareware Alternatives to iWeb InformIT offers a look at some alternatives to Apple's iWeb. "With all its ease of use, iWeb is not the only consumer web/blog/podcast tool available to Mac users and to .Mac subscribers. There?s an argument to be made that it isn?t even the best option. Although powerful, iWeb requires a lot of system resources, is not always the most cost-effective tool (although the other applications in the iLife suite make the package as a whole well worth the cost), and is cumbersome if your site will be hosted on a server other than .Mac. The five tools below offer many of the same features as iWeb (including easy publishing to .Mac), but with a smaller resource footprint, the ability to run on earlier Macs than iWeb (iLife ?06 can run only on G4 machines and better), more streamlined interfaces for specific tasks, and much easier publishing to other web hosts via FTP?making them the top five shareware alternatives to iWeb."
