Adobe InDesign 1.0is shipping (at least some readers have reported receiving their copy, although others have been told by Adobe that the official shipping date is still weeks away). One reader notes that the program will only print to Postscript printers. (This, for example, leaves out many popular Epson printers.)
Update: Chap Bowie replies (regarding PS printing):"InDesign has built in the pdf libraries that allow it to export directly to pdf files which can then be printed from Acrobat Reader to any printer. Adobe intends to support that route with additional software - PressReady - intended expressly for inkjet printers."

Intuit Quicken 2000 has also started shipping (see item above for initial reports of conflicts with ACTION Files and Default Folder).

FileMaker Pro Developer Edition 4.0v3 is out. It improves the handling of dates related to Y2K issues.

Excel ODBC security issue for PCs On July 27, 1999, Microsoft became aware of a security issue involving the ODBC database driver that is installed as a part of Excel 97. It is possible that a malicious coder could create an Excel 97 spreadsheet that exploits a vulnerability in this database driver to delete files and perform other malicious acts. A user could encounter this problem by opening a spreadsheet attached to an email message or linked from a Web site. A separate vulnerability in the ODBC database could affect Excel 2000 users. Updates are now available that fix this. There is no mention that Excel 98 for the Mac has this problem. So presumably it is okay. (Thanks, Wayne Jennings.)
