IM giants told to play nice Apparently, some heavy-hitters are putting pressure on instant messaging providers to make sure their services work together. CNET reports that two weeks ago, six top financial institutions met secretly with AOL Time Warner, Microsoft, IBM and other leading corporate instant messaging providers and urged them to build communications networks that interoperate. Mac OS for x86--hearsay or heresy? Writing for ZDNN, Larry Seltzer explores the swelling issue of potentially porting Mac OS X to Intel processors. An exceprt: "It's an irresistible rumor because there's a certain logic to it (for those of us who don't use Macs) and because it's impossible to disprove. Nonetheless, it makes little to no sense for Apple to pursue such a strategy." More.

Your face on an icon Wired News profiles a designer who has capitalized on Mac OS X's support for large, high-resolution icons: "Now an enterprising graphic designer from upstate New York has updated and democratized portraiture with a cut-rate service that turns ordinary people into icons for their computer desktops. For a mere $15 a pop, Paul Sahner's Iconize Me service will create a portrait in pixels that can be displayed almost anywhere on a Macintosh computer, from a folder to an electronic business card.
