G4 upgrade for iMacs! PowerLogix announces the release of the iForce G4 processor upgrade for Apple iMac systems. This is a CPU upgrade that replaces the factory G3 processor card with a new G4 processor running at 400-500MHz and is faster than any stock iMac available new. This upgrade should begin shipping in Q2 of 2001. Prices range from $379 to $699.

EdView vs. iReview As several readers noted, Apple now has an EdView section of their Education web site which is superficially similar to the now defunct iReview. However, EdView does not rates/review sites and reader comments are not included. And, with EdView's emphasis on education, sites such as MacFixIt are no longer to be found (alas!). Apple still has not given any explanation for its decision to eliminate iReview. We suspect it was mainly economics: the traffic iReview was getting was not worth the time and resources required to maintain the site. Plus there were the potential political headaches involved in giving negative reviews.

Photoshop 6.0.1 update was released - and then pulled. It was only available via Adobe's ftp site (thanks, Cleve Posey). Expect it to show up for real on Adobe's web site soon.

Update: Two readers who got the update (Ian Kelleigh and Rob Wiebe) report the same symptom: The update installer failed to work, claiming that it "cannot locate Adobe ImageReady" - even though InageReady is installed and in its default location. Cleve Posey did not have this problem.

Update: Marc Pawliger (of Adobe) has asked us to remove the link to the Photoshop 6.0.1 update (we have). He writes:

"The update is not official. The official release will have a web page with more information on the fix, how to install it, etc.

In addition, I investigated further with user Ian Kelleigh and we determined he was trying to update a beta version of Photoshop 6. The 6.0.1 updater will only work with the official 'golden master' Photoshop 6.0. The 'Could not find ImageReady 3.0' error means the updater could not find the files it needed to perform the update."

MUSICMATCH Jukebox 2.0 beta is now available. It is version of the software that provides "CD ripping and burning; CD-quality MP3 encoding, personalized MP3 radio, and more."

Mac OS 9.1 Report updated We updated Troubleshooting Mac OS 9.1 over the week-end with several minor additions.

MacFixIt Forums threads deleted Several forums in the MacFixIt Forums (notably Troubleshooting Hardware, Troubleshooting Software, and Troubleshooting Mac OS 9) had symptoms indicating possible corruption of some of their threads. As these forums also contained the largest number of threads of any of our forums, we decided it was time to prune the tree. We eliminated thousands of older threads from these forums. While this may mean that some threads you seek will no longer be found, it has seemed to fix the corruption problem and overall performance has improved.
