Apple posts a profit Apple has announced financial results for its fiscal 2001 second quarter ended March 31, 2001. For the quarter, the Company posted a net profit of $43 million, or $.12 per diluted share. These results compare to a net profit of $233 million, or $.64 per diluted share, achieved in the year ago quarter. Revenues for the quarter were $1.43 billion, down 26 percent from the year ago quarter, and gross margins were 26.9 percent, compared to 28.2 percent in the year ago quarter. "Apple returned to profitability in this tough economic climate by launching several innovative new products," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. The general reaction in the press has been positive, noting that Apple topped analyst expectations (see one, two and three). Apple stock closed up at 22.79.

Sonnet "acquires" Newer assets: a clarification Previously, we noted that Sonnet had "acquired" assets from Newer. A clarification: Sonnet did not acquire Newer's customer base or their obligations of support. So don't call Sonnet expecting them to help you with your Newer products. They simply acquired some of Newer's institutional hardware (but not their retail products).

    Update: Sonnet will also be getting all of Newer's "intellectual property," including Gauge Pro and GURU.

TechTracker teams with Opera! As noted in localbusiness.com: TechTracker has become a strategic partner with Opera Software, a Norwegian developer of a popular European Web browser named, appropriately enough, the Opera Web Browser.

Macworld CD not related to MacFixIt We discovered that the free CD included with newsstand copies of the May issue of Macworld is titled "Mac Fix It." In fact, it is not in any way associated with MacFixIt. Macworld has apologized, informing us that this was an obvious error and that editorial was not aware of the CD title until after it shipped.
