New & Noteworthy: Apple drops UK iMac 15" prices; ATI Dabbles in GDDR3; Wi-Fi Deemed Risky

Apple drops UK iMac 15" prices In addition to the $100 price drop on its 15" SuperDrive flat-panel iMac in the United States, Apple has cut the cost of two of its 15-inch LCD iMacs in Great Britain according to Macworld UK. The entry-level 15-inch LCD iMac now costs £999 (including VAT), down from £1,049. The SuperDrive-equipped iMac now costs £1,399, a £100 price cut from its previous £1,499 price bracket. More.

ATI Dabbles in GDDR3 ZDNN reports on a new ATI version of DDR ram, dubbed GDDR3, promises to be substantially faster, capable of handling data at speeds up to 800MHz, compared with the limit of 400MHz for current DDR. The new memory format is intended for use on graphics cards, the circuit boards that connect a graphics processor to a PC and typically contain up to 128MB of dedicated memory. More.

Wi-Fi Deemed Risky Wired News notes a recently released report in which the government asked federal agencies to exercise extra caution when using a wireless local area network (LAN) for Internet access. "Starbucks customers who like surfing the Net wirelessly as they sip lattes might be surprised to hear that the federal government considers the practice dangerous." More.
