Netscape scrollbars vanish: an explanation?

Regarding our previous item concerning scrollbars that disappeared in certain Netscape web pages (particularly where Java was used), Wolf Naegeli spotted a web page for a MapCafe update that suggests that problem may be due to the use of certain third-party applets or plug-ins. The page states:

MapCafe (build z19) fixes the following issues found in the released version (build z18) of MapCafe:

1. The Netscape Communicator browser v4.04 and above supports JDK v1.1 AWT functionality. Due to a change in the Z-ordering of components introduced by the JDK v1.1, MapCafe z18 no longer displays scrollbars correctly. This is fixed now.

2. The Netscape browser on the Macintosh platform did not show the scrollbar, or the scrollbar appeared but did not work. This is fixed now.
