Netscape Communicator 4.5 glitches: a follow-up

Regarding our previous report on problems with Communicator 4.5 beta:

Slow URL entry glitch Last time, we noted that deleting the Global History file solved a problem where typing response in the Location box was very slow. Joshua Inglima offers a more "permanent" work-around:

  1. Delete Global History file
  2. Set Netscape to clear visited links every 365 days (limit)
  3. Create a folder named "Global History" in the Netscape Preferences folder. This prevents Netscape from tracking the URLs since it can't replace a folder with a file. It will, however, delete the folder after the 365 day time period. The main downside to doing this is that all links will remain the "unclicked" color. I found this greatly increases the speed of entering a URL.

Jim Muha adds: "On the subject of deleting the Global History file In Communicator 4.5b1, I also found that after deleting my Global History file, Communicator definitely does not have the long delay at shutdown, it also seemed to speed up the delay between the click on a link and when the page starts to load."

Options removed? Kurt Radtke could not find some Mail/Newsgroup preferences that had been present in previous versions. "I most miss the ability to set 'leave mail on server' and 'Check for mail every xx minutes.' These used to be part of the 'More Options' or 'More Choices' button on each of the panels." However (as pointed out by Scott Rogers and others), these features are still around. They just are not easy to find. To find them:

  1. Go to Preferences/Mail and Newsgroups/Mail Servers.
  2. Click the word "mail" in the Incoming Mail Servers box.
  3. Click the Edit button. These options will appear (one each in the General and POP tabs).

Reader Jack reports: "Unlike previous versions, Communicator 4.5's Newsreader module will not display graphics as they download. You must sit and stare at a blank screen until the whole file arrives. This wastes time since you cannot cancel out of a download once you determine (by viewing the top portion of the graphic) that you don't need to see more."
