Netflix doubled its number of Emmy nominations this year, but at the glam ceremony doling out prizes in the most high-profile categories Monday night, it failed to garner a single win.
The online subscription-video service, which touts itself as the "world's leading Internet television provider," made headlines last year with its nominations and three wins at the Emmy awards, the first time that an online-only service competed for US television's top creative honors in major categories.
At a Creative Arts Ceremony a week ago, Netflix won seven Emmys of its 31 total nominations this year, such as one for guest actress Uzo Aduba, who plays Crazy Eyes on "Orange Is the New Black." The most important awards, however, are saved for the primetime ceremony televised to millions.
A growing pile of award nominations and wins for Netflix's originals have solidified the service's status alongside that of HBO and major broadcast networks as a producer of high-quality programming, but for the public at large, the primetime Emmys awarded at the glitzy, star-studded ceremony Monday night are the seal of approval of TV excellence.
Last year, Netflix won an Emmy for director David Fincher's directing of "House of Cards," as well as Creative Arts Emmys for casting and another for cinematography, and the company netted 14 total nominations. And prior to the 2013 awards, Netflix had a Technology and Engineering Emmy to its name.
