Netflix purges 79 movies, say goodbye to 'Taxi Driver'

The streaming service will pull dozens of titles from its streaming catalog on July 1, but it's also adding dozens of new titles.

It's that time of year again when Netflix purges its streaming movie cache -- and this round could hurt some movie buffs.

Not only are classics like "Taxi Driver," "Spaceballs," and "Chinatown" getting nixed, but more modern movies like "Lars and the Real Girl" and "Resident Evil" are also being cut. A total of 79 titles will be eliminated and users only have until July 1 to watch them before they vanish (see full list below). The list only applies to US users, as the Netflix catalog differs from country to country.

The news comes from tech news site KnowTechie. While Netflix has made no public announcement, this type of information can apparently be sussed out from the company's public API. It's also in the fine print when looking at each movie's information on Netflix's site.

While it's hard not to lament to loss of many of these movies, Netflix is also adding dozens of new movies to its catalog, according to KnowTechie. Hits such as "Basic Instinct," "Boyz in the Hood," "Dead Man Walking," "Mean Girls," and "The Hunt for Red October" will be added (see full list below).

A Netflix spokesperson told CNET that movies available for streaming are constantly being added and taken away.

"Netflix is a dynamic service and we are constantly updating the TV shows and movies available," the spokesperson said. "By adding titles almost daily, Netflix offers a wide variety of content across all genres. Sometimes certain titles expire and will no longer be available on Netflix. As titles slide off the service, new ones are always sliding on."
