Users have reported issues when attempting to access and manage their accounts in Apple's iTunes Music Store. Symptoms include failed downloads, inability to upgrade user library, and inability to access the iPhone software update server.

Apple Support Discussions user "allanster" describes his issues with the iTunes Music Store:

"I can sign in to account, modify account, but when I try to sign in to upgrade library it just loops without errors (blanks password field).

Here's another connection issue that's taken me all day to figure out, when trying to Update iPhone software, kept getting "The iPhone software update server could not be contacted"."

Possible solution
It appears that this issue is being caused by settings in NetBarrier X5. ASD user "allanster" came to this conclusion:

"After two days of troubleshooting, updating iTunes, speaking with Apple Online Chat support, their only solution was to back up library, completely remove iTunes, and reinstall. I discovered on my own that none of this was the problem, it was a setting in Intego NetBarrier X5 preventing only this one particular logon window from working.

Solution: Goto Intego NetBarrier X5 -> Overview -> Privacy -> Data -> Surf -> and uncheck "Hide my AppleID when using the iTunes MiniStore"."

To combat issues with the iPhone software update server "allanster" recommends:
"Solution: Another Intego NetBarrier gotcha of course, NetBarrier X5 -> Privacy -> Banner Filter -> turn it off."
Many connectivity issues with security heavy sites and services (such as Apple's iTunes Music Store) are related to settings in your virus protection software. Whether you have NetBarrier X5, Norton, or any other virus protection solution, be sure to check their settings (or disable them) if you are experiencing similar issues with a trusted site. As always, be sure to have a backup when attempting to uninstall/reinstall iTunes.
