NetBarrier: some initial reactions

NetBarrier: some initial reactions

CNET staff
I have been working with NetBarrier 1.0.1 for the past week. It acts as a personal customizable firewall and also acts to block attacks on your computer (such as ping attacks and SYN flooding). Some personal observations:
The antivandal feature was working well, perhaps a bit too well. It has already detected several ping attacks. But the IP addresses for all of them are from my cable vendor (@home.com). I suspect that these are not actual attacks but something that the cable provider routinely does.

The main problem I have had is with the firewall feature. Whenever I turn it on (no matter what option I select), I lose all access to the Internet. I have sent Intego an inquiry about this and hope to get an answer soon.

We have also received some feedback from readers on this software. Here are some highlights:

Richard Akerman similarly reported problems with accessing the Internet when the firewall was in "Client only" mode. He too has a cable connection.

Steve Allen had several problems with his Mac after installing NetBarrier (such as freezes and slow redrawing of windows). As most other users are not reporting these symptoms, he suspects an extension conflict as the cause (possibly IPNetMonitor's OTModl$Proxy extension). We hope to have further information on this by next time.

Todd Buchanan found that NetBarrier worked well as a "security solution" for his ADSL connection. See his web page for more details.
