NAV 6.0 Auto-Protect slows Word 98; Symantec suggests the standard work-arounds

Tony Ruscitti writes: "The Norton AntiVirus 6.0 Auto-Protect extension causes Word 98 to constantly access the hard drive making the program virtually unusable since the program is slowed to a crawl. Disabling the extension returned everything to normal." We have previously covered similar problems (and work-arounds) with SAM and NAV, including one that dates back to 1997. For 1999, this was Symantec's advice to Tony:
Make the following change: In NAV's Preferences menu, select "Scan..." Then deselect the option labeled "Scan for known viruses when files are opened and applications are launched." Save your preferences and restart.

If this does not help, try this: In NAV's Preferences menu, select "Prevention." Then change the scan for virus like activities from "Standard" to "None." Save your preferences and restart.

Keep in mind that checking for virus-like activities is not the same as checking for a known virus. You will still be protected from known viruses as long as the virus definitions are kept up to date.
