Mugger offered flip phone, says 'no thanks'

A man is accosted by a gun-wielding mugger in Central Park. When he produces his 3-year-old flip phone, the mugger turns his nose up.

It seems that flip phones (this is an Android classic) aren't popular with NY muggers. CNET

Oh, it's funny now.

But how funny was it at the time, when Brooklyn resident Kevin Cook stared down the barrel of a mugger's gun?

As the New York Post reports it, Cook encountered a mugger in Central Park over the weekend. The mugger, who had an accomplice, was allegedly after Cook's phone.

"Once he saw my phone, he looked at it like, 'What the f-k is this?' and gave it back to me," Cook told the Post.

What was wrong with Cook's phone? Well, it's a 3-year-old Windows flip phone, perhaps not the most desirable object to be seen with in New York.

The New York Police Department -- and several other police departments -- is at its wits end with iPhones being stolen. Apple's phones are now at the heart of 14 percent of all New York crime.

Windows flip phones are presumably but a blip in those statistics. Perhaps this is why Cook, a sports club salesman, said: "I guess he didn't think he could get anything for it."

This all happened at 12: 30 a.m. on Saturday -- perhaps not the perfect time to be walking through Central Park.

Cook said he managed to use his flip phone to call 911, but the mugger and his sidekick got away.
