The death of synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog over the weekend at 71 is being marked by a number of online requiems.

Moog's invention was one of the first electronic instruments to be widely used by musicians. Its creation changed the sound of popular music. Used by bands from the Beatles to Yes and Pink Floyd, it created one the defining sounds of '70s music.

The loss was felt deeply by the Internet community, which responded with an outpouring of affection for the inventor and his work.

"There are those who build instruments, and there are those who are innovators and pioneers, and Robert Moog is one of the few true pioneers in this field that I think we have seen in the last century."

"But no matter your opinion of electronic music, Moog definitely broke new ground."

"The amazing thing is this diversity is in Bob Moog's instruments. He always claimed to be a toolmaker not a musician. He spent time with musicians and took their feedback into the design of his instruments. He understood that, and most importantly he understood and cherished the uniqueness of each individual playing one of his instruments"
