Kitchen gadgets come in all shapes and sizes, but it's the ones that try harder that stick out. The importance in that can be found in what they try to do. Sometimes it makes sense: think food processors with differing blades and stand mixers with attachment collections. But occasionally one comes along that tries to integrate two seemingly disparate tasks into one package. Yet, when an everyday gadget gets paired with a not-so-everyday task, everybody wins.

The Mastrad Mortar and Grater Combo ($80.00) is a kitchen tool perfect for some, less so for others, but curious all around. Combining the aspects of a grater with the ancient qualities of a mortar and pestle achieves a synergy that could result in culinary exploration or perhaps just some grated parm to toss on top of a frozen pizza. The important thing is: the opportunity is there.

Not every kitchen needs a mortar and pestle, nor does every kitchen even need a grater (but it sure makes things easier). Having the two tools easily available in one accessible package is not something that will necessarily inspire. But it might. Perhaps herbs and spices will be ground, creating a fresh blend that will lead to a new dish. Whatever and however the use is determined, the end result can be safely stored as the set also includes a lid for easy storage. Perhaps it will be an everyday gadget after all.
