More on updating to Final Cut Pro 3.0.4

CNET staff

Yesterday we reported that shelf copies of Final Cut Pro 3, marked with the version number 3.0.2f1, cannot be properly updated to Final Cut Pro 3.0.4, which is available as a standalone download from Apple. Users who are able to successfully upgrade to Final Cut Pro 3.0.4 purchased a boxed version simply marked 3.0.2 (excluding the f1 suffix).

Installation of the update fails with the error: "This is not a version of Final Cut Pro which can be updated. (err 2)."

It now appears that users may be able to obtain a new 3.0.2 CD by invoking AppleCare support. William Kucharski writes:

"The only way you can tell is when you open the box and run the installer CD and it installs version 3.0.2f1. Once again, there is no way to tell before purchase. The only safe thing to do is to buy an older copy that is marked just 'Final Cut Pro 3.0,' which can then be updated first to 3.0.1 then to 3.0.4

"Apple told me it was a 'manufacturing error' affecting a 'limited number of CDs' and they urge those who got 3.0.2f1 to use their 90 days of free AppleCare support and report the problem, and they will be sent a new 3.0.2 CD."
