More on missing channel with SoundSticks; workaround

CNET staff

Yesterday we continued coverage of a problem where one channel of audio disappears with the Apple-sold Harmon Kardon SoundSticks, as well as problems using the SoundSticks with GarageBand - generally when the speakers are not connected directly to a Mac, but rather through a USB hub.

Several readers have now reported that they were able to work around this issue using the "Audio MIDI Setup Utility" which is located in the Applications>Utilities folder.

MacFixIt reader John writes "I had the same problem with Soundsticks - one of the symptoms was that adjusting the system volume would result in the audio being panned from one side to the other. I also experienced the problems described with Garageband and I couldn't route audio from Cubase to the soundsticks either.

"The way to fix this is via Audio MIDI Setup. For some reason, something is changing the Soundsticks configuration to '1 channel 16 bits' instead of '2 channels 16 bits.' Just set them correctly and all the problems will go away."
