More Mac mini DVI/video-out problems

Last week we reported problems with DVI (Digital Visual Interface) displays -- including some manufactured by Apple -- and the Mac mini.

We continue to receive notes of corroboration from readers.

Jeff Schoch writes:

"I too am having a problem using the DVI on the Mac Mini. With several applications open and switching between the apps in the dock or opening and closing windows the screen will go black for a second and then pop back up with no warning. It seems to happen more often when opening and closing windows but has also appeared when the computer is not in use. When the computer is not in use it usually rolls the video vertically (like you use to have happen with older TVs and the vertical hold). I have changes monitors and cables but it has affected all setups that I have used. It can get very bad at times with the screen blanking out about every 10 seconds or so. I have not been able to figure out why it is doing this.

Power-saving Olivier Dubois describes power-saving issues with DVI screens and the Mac mini.

Olivier writes:

"My Acer AL2021 could not reliably be recovered from a kind of deep sleep mode after being suspended. The only solution was to physical disconnect power for a few seconds.

"This might be an issue to the specific LCD display. My temporary solution is to disable screen inactivity saving although not a desirable way to proceed. "

Physical connection issues Art Mickel describes an issue with the physical DVI connection piece that results in an improper fit and loose connect-point.

Art writes:

"My Mac mini (1.42 GHz w/airport, ordered from the Apple online store) uses the Apple supplied adapter to connection a third party LCD monitor. The adapter has screw receptacles that allow the monitor cable to be snuggled (standard industry fittings) but there is nothing to fasten the adapter to the mini. Consequently any movement cause video problems (weird colors, black outs, etc.). It?s necessary to jiggle the connector until the proper image returns to the screen. So far the only solution has been to make sure the mini is not disturbed?difficult to do when changing connections at the USB ports."
