More information on the AppleCare disc for Intel-based Macs

CNET staff

We previously noted that the utility disc included with AppleCare did not function with Intel-based Macs because it does not (as of yet) include an Intel version of Mac OS X, disallowing the discs to be used as startup volumes. Its primary tool -- TechTool Deluxe -- is not yet a Universal Binary.

We subsequently noted the recent appearance of a new Intel-based Mac-compatible AppleCare disc.

MacFixIt reader Bill Robertson now reports some details for the new disc, which does not include any troubleshooting/maintenance utilities, but only the Apple System Diagnostics program.

Bill writes:

"It's a boot disc just for MacBook Pro, iMac (early 2006 17-inch) and iMac (early 2006 20-inch) only. It's labeled ASD Dual Boot 3S101. There are four .pdf files: ASD User Guide; ASD Test Results Guide; ASD Read Me Service; and Burning ASD to Disc. It boots into the Apple Service Diagnostic application only. It's dated March 2006. It's a dual-boot DVD. The part number is 691-5743-A."
