Popular blog search Web site Technorati posted a report on the growth of blogs that shows that, on average, the number of blogs is doubling every five-and-a-half months. As of last month, more than 80,000 blogs were created daily, with a new blog created every second, the report found. Technorati tracks more than 14.2 million blogs. About 55 percent of all new bloggers are considered active, or had a posting in the last three months and about 13 percent update at least weekly, according to the study.

Blogger, MSN Spaces, AOL Journals and software like WordPress and Movable Type, as well as hosted blog services from ISPs and others are boosting the growth, Technorati founder and CEO David Sifry writes in a blog on the study. In addition, the phenomenon of moblogging is on the rise as more people blog from their camera mobile phones, he says.

"Tomorrow I'll give an update on posting volume, which is a better statistic to track the growth of blogging. Lots of people who start new blogs are kicking tires and thus the numbers displayed above could be indicative of a fad in progress--but watching the posting volume shows how many people are actually blogging on a day-by-day basis," writes Sifry. Later in the week, he plans to write about trends in tagging, spam or fake blogs and to provide an update on the "relative influence of blogs compared to the mainstream media," a topic of much interest to reporters who find themselves increasingly competing with, and even blogging about, blogs.
