Microsoft resumes Windows Phone 7 update for Samsung Omnia 7

Microsoft has resumed pushing out its first Windows Phone 7 update to Samsung Omnia 7 handsets, having squashed the bug that laid waste to a number of the phones last month, when their owners tried to install the patch.

"Starting today, we plan to resume rolling out the February update to Samsung phones," writes Microsoft's Michael Stroh on the official Windows Team Blog.

"During the past week the engineering team has pinpointed and fixed problems that were preventing a small percentage of Windows Phones from installing the February software patch.  We apologise again for the delay and continue looking for ways to improve the update process."

Last week, Microsoft confirmed that around 10 per cent of WP7 users had a problem when installing the update, although nearly half of those failed due to "a bad Internet connection or insufficient computer storage space". The rest were Omnia 7s, which in his original blog post, Stroh said was due to "a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process".

As before, not every Omnia 7 owner will be getting the update immediately -- it's rolling out over days and weeks, depending on Microsoft's partnerships with operators. Given the problems with the initial patch, you can bet those operators will want to give the fixed version an extra test or two just to make sure.

The update itself doesn't deliver new features. It's a pre-update update -- yes, that does sound a bit silly -- preparing handsets to receive the proper first patch for Windows Phone 7 sometime this month.
