Network Security Updater Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit sent us the following information on the Network Security Updater (it confirms what we posted yesterday):

Before you run Microsoft Office v. X Network Security Updater:

  • You must install the EntourageX-Hotmail Updater prior to running the Network Security Updater.

  • All non-system applications and processes must be quit prior to running the Network Security Updater. These include user applications, applications running in the background, other users' applications, root processes, etc. The updater software we licensed attempts to quit all applications and hangs if it is unable to do so (such as not having enough permissions to do so, or the process putting up a dialog). If you see the "One moment please" window and think you are hung, it is likely there is still another application process running (such as RetroRun, RetroRun Helper, etc. [which are root processes]). In many cases you can overcome this by logging in as an administrator. Otherwise use the ProcessViewer utility to kill these extra processes before running the updater.

Update: We asked Microsoft for some additional clarification on when the Hotmail patch is needed. Here is what we learned:

  • If you have the full product, but Entourage is not installed on the machine, then you do not need to run the Hotmail patch for the Network Security Updater to work.

  • If you have a standalone version (which doesn't have Entourage), then you also do not need to run the Hotmail patch.
