Microsoft pulls Surface Pro 2 firmware update
After user complaints, Microsoft has removed the most recent firmware update for the Surface Pro 2.
Microsoft has made the rare move of removing a firmware update after a number of user complaints.
The Surface Pro 2 update had received a number of complaints from users mostly around the patch failing to install.
Perhaps worse, those users who had managed to install the update now found their Pro 2 plagued with battery issues.
Microsoft forum mod Josh_F posted this when announcing the firmware removal:
To ensure the best experience for our customers during the holiday season, we have taken steps to remove the update for Surface Pro 2 that was previously published through Windows Update on December 10, 2013. We are working to release an alternative update package after the holidays.
A number of replies followed with people asking what would be done for those who were experiencing issues post-install. Complaints included "battery consumption, hardware failures and issues with booting/sleeping" and the tablet "no longer charg[ing] to 100 per cent".
At the time of writing, Microsoft had not commented on a fix for these issues. It's possible that the fixes will be part of the new firmware and therefore not available until after the holiday break.
