Removing Office From a Microsoft Office Read Me file:

"When you install Office 98 by dragging the Microsoft Office 98 folder, Office 98 does not remove files from any previous versions of Office or Office applications from your hard disk." You can use the Remove Old Office Versions application to do this.

"Remove Office 98 helps you find and remove pre-release and current versions of Office 98 that you no longer need on your computer. Unlike the Remove option in the Microsoft Office Installer, Remove Office 98 will completely clean your drive of all system extensions, control panels, shared libraries, and preferences from a previous installation."

You can find both applications in the "Administration Tools" folder inside the "Value Pack" folder on the Office CD. [Note: David Bayly reports that removing all files associated with Word 6 solved a problem with Word 98 not starting up.]

Update: Steve Sell claims that he ran the Remove Old Office Versions app, but it failed to remove his Office 4.2.1 folder, leaving all the folder's contents intact.

Update: Jamie Brandt claims that the problem is that the Remove Old Office utility does not work properly if there is anything in the old folder other than what was originally installed there. "For example, if you saved a document or template in the folder, the folder remains with everything except the application."

Updating Explorer From another Microsoft Office Read Me file: "If you currently use Internet Explorer version 4.0, please upgrade to version 4.0a. Internet Explorer version 4.0a is included on the Office CD, or you can download the latest version from the Web.
