Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.4: Entourage database corruption; problems installing

Database corruption and problems installing.

CNET staff

Some users have reported corruption of Entourage email databases after applying the Office 2008 12.1.4 update.

One reader writes:

"In Mac OS X 10.5.5 after the last 12.1.3 Office 2008 update and also after the 12.1.4 update to Office the Identities in Entourage have been damaged during use. This results in messages appearing on the Exchange Server and in the inbox as folders with an extension of .EML. The body of the message is unreadable. Rebuilding the database does not correct the issue. All information is essentially lost. Has happened on at least two Macs here, one an Intel MacBook and the other a PowerBook G4."

If you experience this issue an a database rebuild fails, you may want to try manually moving data to a new identity, or try using the tool EntourAid.

Problems installing Some users have had problems installing the update, wherein the update installer does not recognize the old version of Office, and therefore states that the system does not meet requirements. This issue can generally be resolved as follows:

  1. Download the standalone Office 2008 12.1.4 updater
  2. Mount the disk image then control-click the updater file and select "Show Package Contents"
  3. Navigate to Contents -> Resources
  4. Open the script "package_updatable" with TextEdit or another plain text editor.
  5. Remove these lines:
    • if not found_valid_version:
    • sys.exit(48)
  6. Save the file then close it and reattempt the update.

Other problems after the update? Please let us know.
