The Microsoft Surface Book.

Marking the one-year anniversary of the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft is releasing a series of changes it calls the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. But if you'd rather start with a brand-new PC than update the operating system on your old one, Microsoft has announced a series of temporary discounts on some Windows 10 laptops and hybrids, from retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, the Microsoft Store and Staples.

This anniversary sale includes a few of my favorite Windows PCs from the past year among the 10 deals listed. The Dell XPS 13 is $100 off at the Microsoft Store, as is the HP Spectre x360. A version of the ambitious Microsoft Surface Book hybrid is $150 off at Best Buy. Each of these systems received a four-star rating in its CNET review. Note that the on-sale configurations all differ slightly from the models we reviewed.

If you're looking to keep your current PC but have not upgraded to Windows 10 yet, the free upgrade period has officially passed, but there are still a few ways you can try to score a free upgrade.
