Microsoft extensions installed by Photoshop 5.5 cause crashes in Office 98;<br>

Kodak extension follow-up Microsoft extensions Three readers (Steve Godun, Michael Frankel and Simon Brown) have now reported the exact same cause for system crashes in Office applications after installing Photoshop 5.5.

Photoshop 5.5 installs two Microsoft extensions that are a different version that what Office installs:

  • Microsoft Structured Storage
  • Microsoft Component Library

Apparently, Photoshop installs versions 2.22 of these extensions, while the OLE component of Word 98 installs version 2.24 (of possible relevance, the Internet Access component of Mac OS 9 reportedly also installs the older 2.22 version).

For Steve and Michael, the symptom was Type 2 errors in Microsoft Office applications (especially Word 98, when copying or saving). Steve has seen this occur on several installations. Simon's symptom was Type 11 errors in Word and PowerPoint.

The solution is to delete the versions of the extensions installed by Photoshop. When you next launch an Office application, the newer versions will be installed. Based on reports so far received, doing this does not cause problems for Photoshop itself.

Note: There is a separate documented conflict involving the OLE extension installed by Photoshop 5.5 vs., Office 98. To work-around this glitch, Adobe recommends installing Photoshop after Office 98. Unfortunately, this work-around is exactly what would cause the problem detailed here.

Update: Takashi Yoshida installed Photoshop 5.5 and still had the 2.24 versions of these extensions in his System Folder. He (and we) have no explanation as yet for why he did not have the problem reported here by others.

Kodak extension and Wacom conflict? Steve Noland and Fergus Bremner both report that that Wacom tablet software conflicts with Photoshop 5.5, again most likely due to the "Kodak Precision API extension set" (see previous item for more on reported problems with this Kodak extension). Steve suggests that ATM and StuffIt's TFI may also be involved.
