Prepare to shred through this Iron Maiden RPG.

Back when iconic heavy-metal band Iron Maiden formed in London in 1975, the group probably never imagined it would one day star in an immersive video game played by rabid fans on mobile devices across the globe -- even after their most excessive parties. But that's about to happen with the announcement of Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast, a mobile role-playing game for iOS and Android.

The game is a collaboration among Iron Maiden, Roadhouse Interactive and 50cc Games. Roadhouse Interactive describes it as "an action-packed, free-to-play RPG steeped in Iron Maiden mythology."

Iron Maiden has its own mascot, Eddie, aka Eddie the Head. Eddie may sound like the nice guy next door, but he's actually a zombie-like figure with a serious case of face-rot and a propensity for playing with fire and deadly weapons. This is a perfect setup for a horror video game.

Players will take on Eddie's persona and "explore new worlds, travel through time, and battle a cast of dramatic and engaging characters drawn from the expansive catalogue of Maiden's albums and art." The game will feature a soundtrack packed with Iron Maiden songs to keep players head-banging all the way through.

Iron Maiden's album covers have always had a distinctive look, like they escaped from some dark corner of George Romero's mind. This should give the game designers plenty of fodder for developing the RPG world.

Iron Maiden is still going strong as a band. It released a new album in late 2015 and is heading out on a massive world tour this year. Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast will be be available this summer.
