Mathematica and partitions; Finder slow deletes Another Illustrator Save glitch work-around

Mathematica and partitions: a follow-up Regarding yesterday's report of problems with running Mathematica from certain partitions, Joseph Slater replies: "I spent a good deal of time tracking down this problem of Mathematica 'not working with multiple partitions.' I finally came to the conclusion that you cannot have a partition named System, or perhaps starting with System, or results will be unreliable. This is a confirmed problem that Wolfram Research is aware of." Another fix for the Illustrator Save glitch Rick Meikle found a tip on the Adobe Forums that describes another, simpler way to recover an Illustrator file from the collapsed window Save glitch (see previous item): Create a New file and Place the corrupted file into the new file. It will now work again. No need for a Windows machine or emulator." Finder is slow to delete files Why is the Finder so slow at deleting large numbers of small files? On our Macs, if we try to delete several hundred or more small files at once, it's like watching water drip from a faucet, as each deletion ticks off from the 'countdown" window. Yet, to copy the same number of files to a new location takes only a few seconds. Note: Turning off TechTool Protection improved speed somewhat, but not dramatically. Update: Several readers pointed out that Norton FileSaver could cause this symptom; however we do not use FileSaver. Another Update: Oops. I should have disabled TechTool Trash Cache, not TechTool Protection! If you use File Saver, several readers pointed out that holding down Command-Option, when you select to Empty the Trash, should speed things up (although at the expense of File Saver not tracking the deletions.)
