Massive chart compares more than 200 sci-fi spaceships

How does the Serenity stack up against a Bothan assault cruiser? Or a Turian corvette against a D'Kora-class marauder? Sci-fi fan Dirk Loechel is all over it.

How does the Serenity stack up against a Bothan assault cruise? Or a Turian corvette against a D'Kora-class marauder?

These questions -- and more! -- can be answered by spending some quality time with a piece created by sci-fi fan and DeviantArtist Dirk Loechel. His science-fiction-spaceships comparison chart, a work in progress, contains more than 200 spacecraft, from those in "Alien" to those in Warhammer.

Loechel has been painstakingly scouring the Internet for specs, and we'd be hard pressed to point out a universe that he hasn't covered (although a few individual vessels are absent, here and there). He's used the "official" specifications wherever possible, making for the most accurate and comprehensive comparison chart of sci-fi spacecraft ever made.

Of course, as Luke Skywalker's epic trench run so spectacularly proved, size isn't necessarily a good indicator of what would win in a dogfight, but the chart does help provide a sense of context and scale.

Universes included are those from:

  • "2001"

  • "2010"

  • "Aliens vs. Predator"

  • "Avatar"

  • "Babylon 5"

  • "Battlestar Galactica" (both series)

  • "BattleTech"

  • "Close Encounter"

  • Dead Space

  • "District 9"

  • Eve Online

  • "Event Horizon"

  • "Farscape"

  • "Firefly/Serenity"

  • "Galaxy Quest"

  • Halo

  • "Homeworld"

  • Honorverse

  • Independence Day

  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes

  • "Lexx: The Dark Zone"

  • "Martian Successor Nadesico"

  • Mass Effect

  • "Red Dwarf"

  • "Robotech/Macross"

  • "Silent Running"

  • "Space: Above and Beyond"

  • "Space Pirate Captain Harlock"

  • "Spaceballs"

  • "Star Citizen"

  • "Star Trek"

  • "Star Wars"

  • StarCraft

  • "Stargate"

  • "Starship Troopers"

  • "The Irresponsible Captain Tylor"

  • "Titan A.E."

  • "V"

  • "Wall-E"

  • Warhammer 40,000

  • Wing Commander

In the next update, Loechel hopes to add "Dune," and is taking suggestions for whatever else he may be missing. He did, however, add, "By popular demand: the Tardis is already on the image. Whether it's on the Red Dwarf and .25 pixels large or all of the image is your choice; it's probably both, anyway."
