Many current AppleCare discs do not work with Intel-based Macs; updated version shipping

CNET staff

As we've noted several times before, the utility disc included with AppleCare does not function with Intel-based Macs because it does not (as of yet) include an Intel version of Mac OS X, disallowing the discs to be used as startup volumes.

In addition, its primary tool -- TechTool Deluxe -- is not yet a Universal Binary.

MacFixIt reader Paul Tansey writes:

"Don't know if this is trouble shooting or not, but thought people should know

"Just tried my Applecare which arrived with my MacBook Pro. The Applecare box says its for a Powerbook? And sure enough, try booting from the TechTool disk included, and it will not start. It cannot see the disk.

"Clearly not designed to run on this MacBook

"On phone now to Apple, who say they will replace the disk with the correct one. Which I bet doesn't even exist yet. But we'll see."

We've yet to receive word from Apple indicating when AppleCare discs capable of booting Intel-based Macs with applicable utilities will be available.

UPDATE: Some users are now receiving updated diagnostic discs that can boot Intel-based Macs, though we've yet to receive information concerning what repair/diagnostic software is included on the disc.
