Macintosh Manager 2.0.1: who exactly can use it?

There seems to be some confusion regarding the requirements of the new Macintosh Manager 2.0.1 software. In particular, while it does not exactly say so, it appears to require Mac OS X Server. Here are two reader comments:

"This update is only for those with Mac OS X Server 10.0, not AppleShareIP 6 Servers. Apple's documentation doesn't state it clearly enough. If you install the Update Package 2.0.1 on an ASIP server, it updates the client and then renders them useless as the 2.0.1 software cannot communicate with Mac Management Server 1.x. Someone has to either disable the 2.0.1 manually on each client workstation or try replacing the Update Package 2.0.1 with Update Package 1.4.1." [Andrew McNaughton]

"I installed Macintosh Manager 2.0.1 yesterday on two OS 9.1 systems, thinking that it was a newer version of Multiple Users. Whilst this has been the case in the past, it does not work as one would expect. Indeed, it updates the Login, Panels, and Multi-User Startup files to 2.0.1 (amongst other things) and appears to co-exist with the existing Multiple Users interface. However, regardless of the setting in Multiple Users: "User account will be from:" it always looks to the network for a Macintosh Manager server. Even if you switch it to "Multiple User accounts (local)" it still looks to the network for a Macintosh Manager server and does not allow you to bypass it with a local user profile. This is not good - it effectively disables the Multiple Users functionality. I suppose the only way to fix it is to reinstall Multiple Users 1.4.1." [Shiro Wilde]

Update: Andrew McNaughton has sent us further information: "I contacted Apple Service Provider Support. They confirmed my suspicions. Macintosh Manager 2.0.1 cannot link to an AppleShare IP Server, unlike Macintosh Manager 1.4.1. It can only link with a Mac OS X Server 10.0. My contact at Apple Support says he has drafted a TIL article and submitted it for approval to reflect this."
