MacBook Pro Special Report: ExpressCard issues
Several users have noted some potential issues facing the switch to the ExpressCard standard from PC Card.
First, CompactFlash cards are excluded from operation in an ExpressCard/34 slot because the new standard is too narrow (CompactFlash cards are 43mm wide).
Second, several users of EVDO high-speed cellular data networks will no longer be able to use their PC card-based access devices with the new MacBooks. EVOInfo explores some alternative options, including USB EVDO adapters.
MacFixIt reader Ron Logee had this to say about the move to ExpressCard:
"Yes, FireWire 800 is gone but the ExpressCard slot is 2.5x faster. Someone will make and adapter, perhaps? Also, that ExpressCard slot is good for a lot of stuff, including a TV tuner which could turn the MacBook Pro into a TV and PVR."
