.Mac outages: Inability to retrieve mail, problems synchronizing, more

CNET staff

Users are reporting excessive .Mac outages in droves. The problems include an inability to send or receive mail, problems synchronizing Address Book and other data, and inaccessibility of .Mac-hosted Web sites.

The mail problems may manifest as a rejected password. In addition, the problems may only appear when attempting to access .Mac e-mail with a mail client like Mail.app. As such, if you cannot access your mail in a client, you may want to try using .Mac's Webmail interface.

Users may also experience a problem where they are repeatedly asked for their passwords, then provided with the message:

  • "Connection to the server mail.mac.com has timed out"
Webmail is not a fail-safe, however. It too has been prone to failure, with users receiving the message:
  • ".Mac Mail on the web is temporarily unavailable. Please try again soon."

Unfortunately, this does not seem to be a group of problems that are soluble on the user-end. Instead, .Mac outages appear to be dictated by the whims of Apple's servers, which have been flaky at best over the past several weeks.

If you are experiencing issues with .Mac, please let us know.
