Address Book freezes Users who have set up a up a "smart group" in Address Book that uses non-conditional (e.g. Cards not in a group") may find that the application and is constantly unresponsive after installing Mac OS X 10.5.5.

This problem can be fixed by quitting Address Book, deleting the file ~/Library/Application Support/Addressbook-v22.abcddb, then going the Metadata folder and find the entries with the word 'smart' in them. Delete the negative conditional entries and relaunch Address Book.

External display issues Several users have reported an issue in which external displays no longer function properly with portable Macs after the 10.5.5 update. MacFixIt reader Barry writes:

"There is a problem with the latest update in that my MacBook will no longer work with an external LCD monitor via the DVI adapter. This has been reported on the Discussions Form website by many people, including myself, and at the moment no fix seems available. My screen appears psychedelic when the Macbook is now booted up and seems to be affected on the following screen resolutions: 1280 x 960 and 1280 x 1024."

As reported yesterday, this type of issue indicates a potential driver problem, but currently there are no known fixes. PRAM resets have not helped affected users so far, though users might also try booting into Safe Mode by holding shift at startup, to see if there could be a display driver conflict of sorts with any third-party drivers or software.

SSH not working, fix Some users have discovered that remote logins using SSH no longer function after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.5.

The fix, per MacFixIt reader TJ: Launch the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities and enter the command:

  • sudo chown root /private/var/empty

This changes the ownership of /private/var/empty from NOBODY to ROOT, as it should be.

Printing problems Some users are experiencing printer problems after the update. MacFixIt reader Brian Brunsting writes:

"A coworker and I have started experiencing some odd printer problems after we installed the 10.5.5 update, though we updated HP printer drivers at the same time and initially thought that was the culprit.

"Printing from InDesign CS3 ME to our HP laserjet 4050tn, any page we printed came out HUGE (only the top left crop marks and the very top left of the text made it on an 8.5 x 11 sheet). Because we suspected the HP driver update, I grabbed an old driver (.gz file) from another machine and replaced the new one. That fixed that problem.

"Unfortunately, we also noticed, still only from InDesign CS3 ME, when printing to a print server on a windows machine (Acrobat scans a directory there and creates pdfs of the files while the print server also continues to send the file to a Canon 7105 copier/printer) that the pdfs being created have a really small image of the page, like a thumbnail, even though the paper size here is still 8.5 x 11."

If you are experiencing similar issues, try to restart CUPS manually: Launch the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities) and type the following commands, pressing return after each:

  • cupsdisable
  • cupsenable

Failing that, you may need to reinstall CUPS, or revert to an earlier version of the system. Various versions are available from this Web site: http://www.cups.org/software.php,. First you should use the latest file with a .dmg extension, then move to prior iterations if necessary.

Other fixes:
  • Clear caches Use Leopard Cache Cleaner to perform a medium or deep cleaning of caches. One reader writes:
  • Repair permissions Sure enough, some users have been able to resolve post Mac OS X 10.5.4-update printing issues by repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities).
