Another fix for iMovie launch problems We previously reported that, after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.3, users may have problems with launching iMovie. For most, iMovie refuses to opens, and the usual fix of removing the iMovie preferences, caches, and other iMovie settings files, and then relaunching the program does not appear to help. One user reinstalled the program with no luck resolving the problem.

We noted a few fixes for the issue, including changing scren colors and calibrating the display. Now some users have reported that temporarily adjusting screen resolution can allow iMovie to properly launch. The resolution can be changed back to normal after the update.

MacFixIt reader Fred Girard writes:

"Neither suggested trick worked for me. However I temporarily changed the resolution to 1024x768 and then launched imovie. I then went back to my native resolution of 1280x800 (white ibook) and now imovie always launches. Thanks for the tips"

No artwork in Front Row Several readers have reported that Front Row no longer displays artwork for shared iTunes libraries after the Mac OS X 10.5.3 update.

AirPort persistently scanning Several users have reported an issue in which AirPort persistently scans for networks, never finding valid, accessible networks.

Chris Boughton writes:

"I have upgraded to 10.5.3 on a brand new MacBook Pro. The issue of the wireless continuously scanning for networks is still present. I live n an apartment building and can usually see about 10 networks, 2 of which are mine. Every time I look at the airport status it is scanning. As it is attached to a network which I have specified I cannot understand why does it do this."

Note that "scanning" is typical behavior whenever the AirPort icon is selected in the menubar. However, normally, if networks are in range and found, the scanning indicator will go away and be replaced with the message "AirPort: On." The aforementioned describes an issue in which the "scanning" message never goes away, and no networks can be found, even though they are within range and can be joined.

Network dropouts with Time Capsule Some users have reported repeated drops in network connectivity when using Time Capsule units for access after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.3.

MacFixIt reader Gray Tait writes:

"Not sure what is causing my problem which is that every now and again my 2.4 Intel iMac drops off the network and is hard to get it to rejoin. I have the latest Time Capsule and am running 10.5.3. I am sure this problem started after I installed he combined 10.5.3 updater the day it came out.

"I have to restart the Imac and then fiddle with the airport to get it to connect. Sometimes it takes me 15 minutes to finally to it going. A MacBook on the same network is always unaffected. It is running Tiger."

System hang at sleep Some users have reported an issue in which systems hang and apparently spike in processor usage (typified by blaring fans) when put to sleep after the update to Mac OS X 10.5.3. One reader writes:

"I just updated my Quad G5 tower to 10.5.3 and ever since my Mac goes to SLEEP, it bombs with the fan going at full blast. I tried resetting the PRAM and PMU, but no luck. I had this problem occasionally 10.4.X, it was solved with 10.5 and now with 10.5.3 it is back with a vengeance."

JBL Create speakers MacFixIt reader joekewe writes:

"I was listening to a YouTube video perfectly at half volume on Monday. Upgraded to 10.5.3, and my JBL Creature USB speakers are barely audible. Turned everything up to maximum and still barely audible.  iTunes music is louder than Safari audio, but I still need to adjust much louder than before.  Deleted com.apple.systemsound.plist and restarted with and without the speakers, but didn't help.  Sound through built-in MBP speakers is fine - much louder than the JBLs which used to crank."

Logitech S530 A reader writes:

"My Logitech mouse, part of Logitech's S530 Mac cordless keyboard and mouse combo has been wonky ever since I updated to 10.5.3 on my Macbook Pro and installed the latest service pack to my Cube running 10.4.11 (both done on the same day).

"After I installed the updates above the mouse action has gotten sluggish on the Cube, and when its in the Macbook Pro's window its just barely useable.   Moving the mouse to a spot on the screen and clicking to get the cursor fails often, and i have to move the mouse over to the Cube and back to the laptop to get it to work again."
