Final Cut Express 2.0.x: Capture issues We previously noted that the ability to capture video in Final Cut Pro 4.5 is broken for many users under Mac OS X 10.4.9. Users with this version of Final Cut Pro are experiencing either dropped frames or completely interrupted captures in most cases.

It appears that the same problem affects Final Cut Express 2.0.x under Mac OS X 10.4.9.

MacFixIt reader Steve writes:

"There are a number of reports of exactly the same problem with Final Cut Express - needing the latest version to capture properly after upgrading to OS 10.4.9."

With Final Cut Pro 4.5, the only viable solution is a downgrade to Mac OS X 10.4.8 or an upgrade to Final Cut Pro 5.x.

With Final Cut Express 2.0.x, the same appears to be true -- only a downgrade to Mac OS X 10.4.8 or an upgrade to Final Cut Express HD 3.5.x resolve the issue.

Secure site access problems: Another fix Yesterday we reported on problems with access to secure sites after applying the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update and a host of associated fixes.

There is now another fix to add to the pot, as follows:

Replace the X509Anchors file It appears that in some cases, the X509Anchors is not properly installed by the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update, and replacing it with a valid copy can resolve issues with secure site access.

In order to do so, there are two options:

1. Copy the X509Anchors file (which is located in /System/Library/Keychains/ from another system running Mac OS X 10.4.9 that is able to access secure sites back to the system running Mac OS X 10.4.9 that isn't able to access secure sites.

2. Extract the X509Anchors file from the Mac OS X 10.4.9 installer package and place it on your startup volume, replacing the damaged copy via the following instructions:

  1. Download the Mac OS X 10.4.9 combo updater appropriate to your system (from Apple's download page).
  2. Download and install the shareware application Pacifist
  3. Drag the Mac OS X 10.4.9 installer package (e.g. MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.9Intel.pkg) onto the Pacifist application icon.
  4. Click the triangle next to "System" to expand it
  5. Click the triangle next to "Library" to expand it
  6. Click the triangle next to "Keychains" to expand it
  7. Scroll down and find the file X509Anchors. Drag it to your Desktop or another location (you will have to enter your administrator password)
  8. On your Mac OS X startup drive, navigate to /System/Library/Keychains and locate a similarly named file (X509Anchors). Move it to another location for safe keeping.
  9. Now drag the file from step 7 (the one that you retrieved from the Mac OS X 10.4.9 combo install package) into the /System/Library/Keychains, in effect replacing the damaged file with a good copy -- you will have to enter an administrator password.
  10. Restart your Mac

MacFixIt reader Jim K had success with this fix:

"I have found a solution to the following problem that works for me. It seems that the update deleted or did not completely copy the X509Anchors file located in /System/Library/Keychains/. My solution was to copy the X509Anchor file from one of the Macs that was successfully updated to the Mac that was not loading secure sites. Then I opened the Keychain Access application and ran Keychain First Aid. "

Mail.app: junk filters not working Some users have reported problems with the Mail.app junk filter after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.9.

MacFixIt reader Matt writes:

"Since I updated to Mac OS X 10.4.9 my junk mail filters in Mail don't seem to work at all. Prior to the update they were very thorough and I had custom rules that performed actions such as putting messages with .gif attachments directly into junk. Now it seems that all junk is placed in the inbox."

In some cases, this issue can be solved via the following simple steps:

  1. Launch Mail.app and turn of automatic e-mail checking routines if present
  2. Go to the Preferences item under the "Mail" menu
  3. Click on the "Junk Mail" icon
  4. Click the "Reset" button

VPN connectivity issues Some users have reported problems with VPN (PPTP) connections after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.9.

One reader writes:

"After updating to Mac OS x 10.4.9, I'm unable to connect to my VPN server."

In some cases, this issue can be resolved by the following steps:

  1. Launch Internet Connect (located in /Applications)
  2. Click on the VPN (PPTP) icon
  3. Go to the "Connect" menu in the menubar
  4. Select "Options"
  5. Make sure the option "Send all traffic over VPN connection" is checked.

Third-party device issues

TomTomGo MacFixIt reader Cedric writes:

"Since applying the Mac OS X 10.4.9 combo update, the TomTom Go (at least 910 model) GPS does not mount and is not recognized by the Tomtom Home software."

Griffin AirClick MacFixIt reader Jay writes:

"It looks like the 10.4.9 upgrade breaks support for Griffin's AIrClick USB. I have the latest version of Griffin's software (1.0.6) and have attempted reinstalling that but to no avail. It looks like something is preventing the software from communicating with the USB dongle. So far I've tested this on three Macs, all running 10.4.9."

If you are experiencing similar issues with either of the aforementioned devices, please let us know.
