Mac OS X 10.4.8: Blue screen for several seconds when waking up from sleep (#2)

Mac OS X 10.4.8: Blue screen for several seconds when waking up from sleep (#2)

CNET staff

We previously reported on an issue where various systems running Mac OS X 10.4.8 display a blank blue screen for several seconds when waking from sleep -- an annoying but otherwise innocuous problem.

As previously reported, for most instances of this issue, the only solution is a reversion (downgrade) to Mac OS X 10.4.7 via the process outlined in our Mac OS X 10.4.8 Special Report.

It now appears that this issue is being investigated by Apple, and may see a fix in a forthcoming release of Mac OS X 10.4.x (possibly Mac OS X 10.4.9) or an early iteration of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard).

Again, this specific problem occurs in Mac OS X 10.4.8 but not Mac OS X 10.4.7 or earlier releases.

The problem appears to be related to the loginwindow process, which as its name implies serves up the login window, and is activated when waking from sleep even if a login window is not presented.

As such, you may want to try deleting the following file:

  • /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

if you are experiencing the problem.
