Some users have reported issues with various types of streaming audio after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.6. In particular, users have reported receiving error messages when attempting to stream audio through several popular applications including RealPlayer and Windows Media Player.

MacFixIt reader L Lindholm writes:

"After updating to Mac OS X 10.4.6 on my Powerbook 15" I have a problem with streaming audio. After the update I no longer was able to listen to web radio through my usual dashboard widget which uses Windows Media Player/Flip4Mac. As a Macromedia/Adobe Flash developer I also noticed that I had a problem with streaming mp3 files in mp3-players made in Flash.

"However I can listen to streaming web radio through the VLC player and iTunes. I tried to re-install both Windows Media Player as the Flip4Mac plugin, but without success. I have not found any way to fix my streaming problems."

One reader writes:

"My iMac G5, OS X 10.4.6 won't play some sounds, e.g. .smil files (from NPR) and streaming audio (NBA, public radio stations). It plays iTunes fine.

"My iBook with the same operating system and applications works fine. I've tried tech support at both Apple and Real, but no solutions."

Fixes

Launch GarageBand A fix that has proved successful for this type of issue in the past is also applicable here -- simply launch Apple's GarageBand and play any audio clip.

One reader, Brian, writes:

"I had the same problem and flip4mac gave a -2004 unknown error. the fix is to open garage band and play a small audio clip. audio will stream again, no restart required."

Repair permissions Some users have reported that using Apple's Disk Utility (located in Applications/Utilities) to repair permissions has resolved this issue.

Change output setting This issue can sometimes be resolved by opening the Audio MIDI Setup application (located in Applications/Utilities) and changing the output setting to 44 KHz (44100.0 Hz).
