Mac OS X 10.4.6 (#8): AirPort network not automatically re-joined after sleep; Startup will not proceed after update; more
AirPort network not automatically re-joined after sleep Several readers have noted an issue where after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.6 their systems do not automatically re-join the default AirPort network when waking from sleep.
If you are experiencing this issue, you may want to try the suggestions listed in our AirPort connectivity tutorial, particularly the following:
You may need to delete then re-establish any encrypted AirPort network configurations in order to take advantage of automatic reconnection capabilities after sleep or restart.
This can be accomplished by opening the Network pane of System Preferences, selecting "AirPort" and clicking "Configure." In the "By Default, join:" menu, select "Preferred Networks" then delete all problematic entries. Re-add them manually.
Mac OS X 10.4.6 installer cannot find destination drive Some users have reported an issue where the Mac OS X 10.4.6 installer is not able to locate a proper target installation volume.
In some cases, this issue can be resolved by running the fsck (file system check/repair) function while booted into Single user mode.
If you are experiencing this issue, try the following:
- Restart your Mac, while holding down the Command and S keys to start into Single User Mode.
- At the prompt, type: fsck -yf and press return.
- After the process runs, you should see a message indicating that your default startup disk is "OK". If not, run the command again until the "OK" message appears.
- Next type reboot and press return.
- Your system will restart.
Try running the installer again after these steps, and check for persistence of the issue.
Problems starting up We continue to report on an issue where Mac OS X startup does not proceed after applying the Mac OS X 10.4.6 update. In many cases, this issue is caused by a problem launching the launchd daemon.
The solution for some readers has been to attach the problematic Mac via FireWire to another, properly functioning Mac, and boot the problematic system in target disk mode by holding down the "T" key while it starts up.
You should then download the Mac OS X 10.4.6 combination updater (PowerPC or Intel) on the working Mac and install it on the problematic Mac's hard drive.
Other users have had to resort to an Archive and Install process when this issue manifests.
