Audio streaming issues -- fixes We continue to report on audio streaming issues that occur for some users after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.6. In particular, users are receiving error messages when attempting to stream audio through several popular applications including RealPlayer and Windows Media Player.

One reader writes:

"My iMac G5, OS X 10.4.6 won't play some sounds, e.g. .smil files (from NPR) and streaming audio (NBA, public radio stations). It plays iTunes fine.

"My iBook with the same operating system and applications works fine. I've tried tech support at both Apple and Real, but no solutions."

Fixes

Launch GarageBand A fix that has proved successful for this type of issue in the past is also applicable here -- simply launch Apple's GarageBand and play any audio clip.

One reader, Brian, writes:

"I had the same problem and flip4mac gave a -2004 unknown error. the fix is to open garage band and play a small audio clip. audio will stream again, no restart required."

Repair permissions Some users have reported that using Apple's Disk Utility (located in Applications/Utilities) to repair permissions has resolved this issue.

Read-only server-mounted volumes -- another fix We previously noted an issue where, after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.6, volumes mounted remotely from Mac OS X 10.3.x servers are read-only. The problem that (on the client) the mount point of the server volume has the "User Immutable" flag set. This prevents the Finder and other applications from accessing the volume for writing.

We previously noted a solution that involves clearing the "User Immutable" flag of the server volume's mount point using this Terminal command: chflags nouchg /Volumes/(name_of_mounted_server_volume).

Now MacFixIt reader Mitch offers another workaround that can be enacted from the server end.

Mitch writes:

"I was unable to resolve this issue from the Mac OS X 10.4.6 workstation. Instead I resolved it from the server.

"I never create a share that's the root of a hard drive; this was a folder. I created a new folder on the server, moved the contents from the old folder to the new, renamed the folders and shared the new folder (with the same name as the old). This did require taking this share offline for a few moments but permanently resolved the issue with no concerns for future 10.4.6 upgraders.

"One possibility for the reason this couldn't be fixed at the workstation is the share being a folder on the server, although I had no means to test this.

"The folder was certainly User Immutable, as shown through the ls -lso command."

Mail.app -- won't quit Some users are reporting an issue where Mail.app will not quit after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.6.

One reader writes:

"Since upgrading from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6 the Apple Mail application will not quit without doing a force quit. I have repaired permissions, ran a disk repair and tried a new preference file all to no avail. Any mail I delete from the trash is returns after a force quit. Anyone else having this problem? I am running a G5 1.8 MHz Dual processor with 1.5 Gb RAM. I initially upgraded using software update and the down-loaded the PPC combo update and ran that installer but Mail still won't quit from neither the Menu nor the dock without resorting to force quit."

Third-party applications

Photoshop Elements 3 -- menu items grayed out Some users have reported an issue where various menu items, including the Open and Quit selections from the "File" menu are grayed out and cannot be selected.

In many cases, this issue can be resolved by deleting the following file:

  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Photoshop.Elements.plist
