Monitor EDID files Several readers note problems with Mac OS X 10.2's ability to properly read EDID (extended display identification data) files for certain displays. The most commonly affected monitors seem to be those manufactured by Samsung.

MacFixIt reader Brian writes about his experience attempting to properly calibrate a Samsung SyncMaster 770TFT analog LCD:

"The default color profile assigned by the system if much too light and makes the monitors unreadable. If I calibrate with Apple's tool or a 3rd party tool, such as SuperCal, I can change the monitor settings, and it appears that the profile is saved properly. But as soon as I log out or restart, the settings are lost. When I bring up the Color tab of the Display preferences pane, the profile is back on Generic RGB. And no matter what I select, the monitor remains unchanged. I have to completely recalibrate to effect any change.

"The developer of SuperCal also pointed out to me the Devices pane in the ColorSync Utility. Under 10.1.5, both of my monitors are listed, but under 10.2, nothing shows up. Further, if I examine /var/log/system.log (or hold down Cmd-V on startup), under 10.1.5, I see information about my monitors detected via the EDID protocol appropriately, but under 10.2 I see nothing. Under 10.1.5, the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.ColorSyncDeviceList.plist contains what appears to be reasonable content. Under 10.2, the file is not even present."

A thread on Apple's discussion boards has further user commentary on the EDID recognition issue.

Oni sound, OmniGroup response Steven Massey reported that under Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar, "sounds cuts in and out and make strange noises to the point where it is so painful to listen to you have to turn the sound off" in the popular action game Oni.

Wil Shipley from the Omni Group, which ported Oni to Mac OS X, told MacFixIt:

"We're aware of it. It really stinks. Our three game porters are all really busy these days bringing new games to the Mac -- we have two unannounced and one announced title that they're working on.

"We're going to try to get a release done when we get a chance, since I love Oni so much, but it's hard when we've got a huge stack of new games to get through."

UPDATE: Pete Ware notes that the shareware game Jeweltoy has similar sound problems under Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar).

Blackboard scrolling problems Scott Krajewski reports a rendering problem when using browsers under Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) to access the Blackboard course management system, employed by a number of universities in the United States:

"Blackboard is a course management system for either augmenting traditional courses or doing wholly online courses. One feature is the Virtual Classroom-- a product called Tutornet. It's a Java-based live chat, shared whiteboard, etc.

"With 10.2, when a student is chatting, once the posts scroll off the screen new posts aren't shown until you scroll to the top of the posts and back down. Previously in 10.1.5 and in other OSes the chat window would always show the newest posts in the window."

SPSS 11 delayed for Jaguar fixes Brian Schwartz of SPSS Inc. told MacFixIt that the Mac OS X port his company's flagship statistical package, SPSS 11, will be delayed in order to implement changes for Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar):

"With the announcement of Jaguar at Macworld this past August, we've decided to make the new version of SPSS for Mac Jaguar-compliant. With this added functionality, we are delaying the release of SPSS 11 for Mac until mid-October."
