Jaguar Special Report Our Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) Special Report, which consists of extensive troubleshooting insight and commentary from Macintosh industry figureheads including Microsoft and Tenon Intersystems, is available for Pro subscribers here.

Standalone OS 9 Since a standalone Mac OS 9 install disk is not included with Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), and therefore Macs shipping forward, readers have discovered a number of methods for installing only OS 9 from the Software Restore disks. Greg Forcey writes:

"If one wishes to perform a clean install of OS X on a new optical G4 and still retain OS 9 functionality, just copy the factory installed OS 9 System Folder to another disk before wiping the drive free and reinstalling OS X. Just make sure you install the OS 9 disk drivers while reformatting or repartitioning. After reinstalling OS X, copy the system folder back to the partition set aside for OS 9. This procedure worked fine with my new optical G4."

David Hutley offers the following procedure:

"I have looked at doing the full OS9/OS X install and then binning the OS X but there are quite a few invisible files and if this has to be done every time a re-install is required it would extend the service time. Other problems would arise around the inability to boot into OS9 from a CD.

"The OS 9 image is in an invisible 'dot' folder on the first of the Software Restore CD images. To be precise it is here:

"The 'invisible' 'dot' folder: /Restore CD/.images/OS9General.dmg

"Along with a few other files there: ArtDirTK.dmg, GraphicConverter.dmg, OmniOutliner.dmg, EarthLink.dmg, OS9General.dmg, PMG4XHelp.dmg, FileMaker.dmg, OmniGraffle.dmg, SnapzPro.dmg

"I made this file visible by copying the whole disk to OS9 then using Norton Disk Editor. The OS9General.dmg file can be open using Disk Copy under OS X (and not OS9 as I first tried ). Now you have the clean OS9 files which can be stored on a drive or burnt to CD.

"My next attempt, and one I am currently stuck on, is to try and copy this data to a CD and make it bootable. I have tried Apple Disk Burner and Toast Titanium but with no success. If any of you budding tech's want to take up this issue I would be grateful."

Epson Scanners Epson has posted the following message to its developers' Web site:

"We have temporarily removed EPSON Scan to File and EPSON Scanner Enabler 1.00x Trial 2 versions. An update will be posted soon to add support for Mac OS X 10.2. Please check this site periodically for updates."

FileMaker Pro Alexander Bellekom reports minor difficulties in older version of FileMaker Pro running in Classic mode:

"While running FileMakerPro 4.0/4.1/5.0 under Mac OS X 10.2 in the Classic Environment I'm not able to drag something in layout mode. When I drag a field in layout mode I get the same effect as when I normally press the ALT key. The field gets duplicated."

Le Correcteur Ronald Leroux reports that the Le Correcteur 101 French grammar checker is not compatible at all with Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), consistently crashing after a few minutes of operation.

Time Zones Tom Kalikajaros notes that his Australian time zone is absent from Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), forcing him to use a different designation:

"Our Time zone has been removed. This wouldn't be a problem because we can piggy back off another time zone. Unfortunately this time zone observes daylight savings and we dont. A checkbox for ignoring daylight savings would be great."

Iomega Zip drives Jeff Hanson reports that some Zip disks will not function under Jaguar unless formatted with HFS+:

"I am using a ATA Zip 250 Drive with the latest software. After installing OS X v10.2, Zip 100MB disks will only mount if they were formatted as HFS+ and Zip 250MB disks will only mount if they were formatted as HFS. If a Disk is not formatted as above you get an error."

InterGate Vicomsoft’s InterGate (formerly known as Internet Gateway) has incompatibilities with Jaguar. Andrew McNaughton writes:

"I found that my Mac had inactive IP, and yet the 'LAN-attached' external computers were getting IP and working fine. So the 'router computer' doesn’t get IP and its clients do (with version 8.0.2). I contacted their technical support to be told they were aware and are working on an update to be released soon."

FireWire installation problems Several readers have reported problems installing Jaguar when external FireWire hard drives are attached. Mark Sealey writes

"I have an OWC 'Mercury' external Hard drive attached. Only by removing it from the FireWire chain could I get Installer Disk 1 to present me with a proper 'Select Destination' screen at that stage in the 10.2 installation wizard. The installer stays blank with no image(s) of Volumes as long as an external FireWire device is connected."
