Finder-recorded CDs Unusable on Windows systems? Several readers have reported that CDs containing files within folders, which are burned using the Finder under Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), are not usable on PCs running Windows. The Windows systems cannot see the files in the folders.

A MacFixIt Forum thread harbors discussion of the issue, while one reader reports receiving the response "We only supports CD's being readable on a Mac.We don't test whether they work on a PC," from an Apple technical support representative.

Roxio's Toast is still capable of burning Hybrid CDs, and readers report that discs burned under OS X 10.2 are readable on several Linux operating system variants.

Bootable OS 9 CD from OS X 10.2 Software Restore Discs John Kassebaum has devised another method of creating a bootable Mac OS 9 CD from the Mac OS X Software Restore discs:

"You can get the .dmgs all in OS X. Just copy the entire SRCD1 to a hard drive, then use Tinkertool to 'Show hidden and system files'. After relaunching the Finder in Tinkertool, this makes every invisible file on all your hard drives visible, both OS X files and OS 9 files.

"What I discovered here is that all the .dmgs inside the invisible .images folder on SRCD1 are not inherently invisible themselves, just the folder than contains them. All you have to do is move or copy all the .dmgs to another hard drive or to a normally visible folder. From here I mounted the OS9General.dmg disk image. But before copying the contents to a clean drive partition, I had to delete these invisible files on the target partition: Desktop Folder, Desktop DB, Desktop DF, and Trash, which are the invisible OS9 files on the partition. These files have to be deleted first because, since they are invisible, the OS will not write over nor replace them. But with them visible via Tinkertool I could move them to the trash. Then I copied the contents of OS9General.dmg to the target partition.

"Next, boot up from this install. This OS 9 install wants to take you through the setup movie the first time is it booted up, which I doubt would work if it was on a locked CD. Enter whatever info you want, and get to the Finder.

"From this point you probably have a couple options for burning to bootable OS9 CD from this image. Just to keep this install as clean as possible, I created another OS 9 install from this image on a separate partition and put Toast into it. (I prefer Toast to Disc Burner). I also used my Lacie Firewire Rewritable CD drive to burn the CD, rather than using the CD-RW in the Optical G4. I selected Mac OS CD as the format, copied everything from image on the partition and burned a bootable CD."

Michael Dinsmore notes that at Apple's Mac OS X Upgrade page, there is a link to the "Mac OS 9.2 Fulfillment Program", which downloads a PDF coupon redeemable for a copy of 9.2. It's unclear if this is a bootable CD, or merely an upgrade. Requirements to participate in this program: $20, a receipt for Mac OS X10.2 and submission of one of the three proof of purchase coupons that comes with Jaguar.

Symantec Statement on Norton Utilities Symantec has posted a message to its support site detailing current compatibility plans for Jaguar:

"Norton Utilities 7.0 and 7.0.1 will not run natively in Mac OS X v10.2, code named Jaguar. Please bookmark this page and return for future compatibility information. To examine, optimize, or recover files on your Mac OS X v10.2 disk, boot from the NUM CD and run the utilities from there."

Orange Micro Drivers Coming In response to an inquiry about compatibility with Orange Micro's 906F and 930U SCSI cards, which are not recognized under Moc OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), Michael Brown received the following reply from a company representative:

"We are working on an update for OS 10.2. Check our website frequently for the update."

Datek, iSub Problems Resolved Stuart Pohost notes two significant compatibility fixes delivered in Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar):

"The previously buggy Datek Online streamer now works well using Internet Explorer 5.2. This is the first time that has been the case in a long long time. Second, under the preferences for sound, Jaguar now recognizes my iSub subwoofer and allows me to adjust the volume, which was not available in previous OS X versions. My G4 500 Mhz Cube has never worked better."
