Why some printer drivers no longer function Robert Dotson offers an explanation regarding why some printer drivers cease to function under Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar).

"The main reason why some driver software will be incompatible with Jaguar is the language they are written in and the compiler used to build them. C programs and libraries (and drivers) compiled on Mac OS X 10.1 with gcc 2.5x have a different ABI (Application Binary Interface) than those compiled with Mac OS X 10.2 and gcc 3.1. This is true under all platforms (windows and unix included). This generally effects all kernel and device drivers, since they must be written in C . In addition, the low-level printing architecture on OSX is written in C meaning most non-postscript interfaces, drivers, and applications must be re-compiled under 10.2 and gcc 3.1."

The Developer Tools CD Apple distributed in April 2002 included a pre-release version of GCC 3 (the implementation used in Jaguar). Apple's description confirms Dotson's explanation: "gcc3 in many cases provides faster compile times (C code can take advantage of precompiled headers now), better code generation quality, and improved C support. Note that gcc3's new ABI requires recompiling all C libraries and frameworks."

Lexmark Z65 Dean Burchell reports partial success with his Lexmark Z65 under Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar).

"I have a Lexmark Z65 that does not seem to be compatible with Jaguar (C115). The printer alignment and test work but nothing that is printed goes to queue."

Mozilla Despite being the only browser that works correctly with some on-line banking implementations, Mozilla does not function properly under Jaguar

"Mozilla 1.1a and Mozilla 1.1b do not work properly under Mac OS X 10.2. The browser crashes whenever a page contains Java applets. This makes using my on-line banking impossible. Mozilla was the only browser that worked with my bank, so I hope an update is released very soon."

Third party Wi-Fi cards Kevin Work reports that an 802.11 wireless driver which has been an on-going open source solution for 3rd party Prism/Prism2 wireless cards such as the WaveLAN/ORiNOCO, Cabletron, SkyLINE and D-link PCMCIA cards, is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar).

Canvas 8 Canvas 8 has several issues with 10.2 (6C105), all of which are known to Deneba. All of the problems involve screen drawing.

Toast Scott Villard reports some problems using Roxio's CD burning software under Jaguar, while another reader reports difficulty recognizing his external LaCie CD-RW drive.

"I have some problems with toast 5.1.3. Under Jaguar it will not recognize the format of .dmg files. When I burned a back-up one .dmg file under 10.1.5, it worked fine."

Alexander Henket adds

"My LaCie CDR SCSI (Yamaha CDR400t drive)worked with 10.1.5 like a charm. After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) , the Finder will mount any CD, but Toast Titanium 5.1.4 does not recognize it anymore.

Retrsopect Dantz has posted a message on its Web site stating that the current release of Retrospect is incompatible with the current build of Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), and a solution is being developed.

"Due to core structural changes between OS 10.1.x and 10.2, the current version of Retrospect will not be compatible with 10.2. We are actively working on a release of Retrospect which will fully support Apple's next big OS release, Jaguar 10.2. An exact date is not available at this time. We will announce the release when it becomes available."
