Mac OS 8.6 needed; other comments Regarding the Mac OS ROM 1.0 Update (mentioned here last time), Apple TIL article #60408 notes that the updater requires Mac OS 8.6.
Scott Lahteine's revision C iMac has always had the problem of intermittently ignoring the mouse on startup. The ROM update did not fix this, even though this is one of the issues the update addresses. Based on the info in Apple System Profiler, he suspects that the Update may not have actually updated his ROM. [Christopher Erickson notes to make sure you are using Apple System Profiler v2.2 to confirm that the update is installed.]

On the other hand, James Reid speculates that the Update may fix more than Apple is saying: "I've been experiencing frequent freezes in almost every program on my G3/BW Mac. Since applying this update, I've been using my machine in avariety of programs for at least eight hours with not a single freeze or need to re-boot."

What's in a name? Several readers (and you can add me to the list) query about Apple's recent strategy for version numbering and naming. How is it that an update that updates a ROM from version 1.4 to 1.6 is labeled as 1.0? iMac users may be especially confused. They have to contend with iMac Updates 1.0 and 1.1, both of which also update the Mac OS ROM file. What's the instant clue that Mac OS ROM 1.0 Update is newer that the iMac Update 1.1? Making life more interesting, iMac Update 1.1 updates the Mac OS ROM to, not v. 1.1, but v. 1.2.1. Of course, you'll need Mac OS 8.6 to get Mac OS ROM 1.4. There is no separate update for that version. Nevermind that there is also an iMac Firmware Update 1.2. Get all that? [And don't even get me started on naming computers after the color of their keyboard.]
