Programmable function keys; Mac OS 9 disables "protection";
G3AIO's Geometry setting missing; more Programmable function keys One of the less-publicized new features in Mac OS 9 are programmable keyboard Function keys, accessed via a new option in the Keyboard control panel. However, as pointed out in an Apple TIL article (#60530) and discussed in a MacFixIt Forums thread, this only works with Macs that use the Mac OS ROM file. [This feature may also be present in Mac OS 8.6.]

Mac OS 9 disables "protection" Terry Lawrence noticed that, under Mac OS 9, the General Controls control panel options to "Protect System Folder" and "Protect Applications Folder" are always dimmed and cannot be selected. Update: This is a feature, not a bug. Apple TIL article #60547 states: "In Mac OS 9.0, these features are disabled. If you need to protect files and applications, you should use Mac OS 9.0's multiple users feature to limit access to the computer." (Thanks, Larry Kahan.)

G3AIO's Geometry setting missing The G3 All-in-One Stop Shop web site continues to get reports that the Geometry options in the Monitors control panel are no longer present (for this G3 all-in-one model) after updating to Mac OS 9.

Sherlock 2 Find by Content glitch with spreadsheet text Charles Maurer found that Sherlock 2's Content indexing feature does not index the last word in any spreadsheet cell that contains text. Apple confirmed this and said it will eventually be solved by "third-party text extractor modules that understand how text is stored in particular file formats, and deliver plain ASCII text to Find by Content."

Minor AutoPlay and Multiples Users glitch? Mike Hulsey discovered that "when starting up, my audio CD will begin playing automatically (as it is set to do) until the Multiple Users login pops up. As I have Voiceprint enabled, OS 9 automatically switches the sound input to External Mic at this point. After a successful login, it does not switch back to CD automatically.
