Mac OS 8.6: The stall: A caution about "Configure Manually"

Mac OS 8.6: The stall: A caution about "Configure Manually"

CNET staff
The items on "the stall" from Wednesday and yesterday have now been combined into a new MacFixIt Extra.

Recall, that a suggested work-around was to shift the Configure option in the TCP/IP control panel from DHCP to Manually (and manually enter the remaining values). However, Jonathan McPhillips offers a caution about doing this:

"Manually entering the information provided by the DHCP server can cause problems due to the fact that when the lease on that IP expires, the DHCP server is then free to assign that IP to another machine. When this happens there will be two machines with the same IP which will cause problems. Manually setting IP's without knowing what IP's are available for use will cause problems for you, the network administrator(s) and others on the network." [Leonard Hermens and others offered a similar reaction.]

None-the-less, readers continue to report success with this work-around.
